Chapter 14

Aiden tried to still the nausea churning in his stomach. He hadn’t felt so ill since his first run on for the Bengals. The roar of the crowd. The adrenalin pumping through his veins as he stepped foot on the turf. Except this time, there was no stadium. No crowd. No one chanting his name. Only the perpetual voice in his head reinforcing his father’s prophecy - telling him he was worthless.

He craned his neck to peer out the window as the driver assigned by Tobias drove underneath the wooden sign arching across the gravel driveway. Lush paddocks surrounded them. Leaves in shades of orange, brown and yellow formed a colorful quilt beneath the trees. In the distance, a slow procession of horses and riders rode along a ridge, one behind the other. Soon, a few buildings and a cluster of log cabins appeared.

He didn’t know what to expect here. Tobias said it would be a better option than facing jail time or performing community service in the city, and would offer more privacy from the media.

“You need time to sort yourself out, Aiden. The alcohol. The carelessness. You’re so much better than that. You’ve never been a player we’ve had to worry about before.” Tobias’s departing words had been kinder than the ones he’d uttered a few days prior.
